Yes, that's a good substitute but there's nothing like the real thing :)


Shortly after I first read this post, I wanted to make Emma Lou's recipe for cornbread. With no buttermilk in the house, my internet research revealed that I could add 1 T. lemon juice to 1 c. milk to substitute. It worked, but wasn't quite as delicious as regular buttermilk.


I just pulled these out of the oven and they are devine! The texture is incredible! And thanks for all the research on buttermilk. Good stuff. Thanks for sharing!
